European Vacation

I’ll make this short and sweet, because I’m clearly straying from the whole intention of this Random Thoughts section, and I do have loads and loads of completely stupid random thoughts that I want to put out into the blogosphere!  However, I do want to post a little update on my recent French vacation that swiftly evolved into a full-blown European adventure!

Tour Eiffel at Dusk

So I flew to Paris first for a few days in the City of Lights that saw me wearing the exact same outfit for three days in a row thanks to my airline temporarily misplacing my bag. I stayed in a flat near the Pere Lachaise Cemetary, where some pretty famous folks of yesteryear call home (Moliere, Oscar Wilde, Gertrude Stein, Jim Morrison). I spent my short time there wandering around said cemetary, Le Marais, checking out Notre Dame and the Latin Quarter, smoking shisha, and even finding time for the necessary sprawl in the grass in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower.

After Paris, I flew down to the south of France for the wedding of my friends Amy and Alex in Cannes. The weekend was jam-packed with dinners, wine, recovery, and best of all: catching up with the old Dubai crew. The beautiful

wedding was held in a castle overlooking the sea, and it was pretty much perfect.

Well, this is about where my plans started to derail. Months ago, I had been chatting with an old friend in Dubai, and he told me that he had a friend’s wedding in Bordeaux the weekend after mine in Cannes; we came up with the brilliant idea of tag-teaming each wedding, sandwiched around a roadtrip through the south of France.

Honestly, I thought it was a fantastic idea. I love spontaneity, but unfortunately my spontaneity usually backfires. Especially when the spontaneous plan involves spending ten days with someone I only knew on a casual basis and therefore didn’t really know very well, and also who I hadn’t seen in over a year. Add to the mix that I am independent to a fault and pretty set in my ways, and you have yourselves a recipe for disaster. The proverbial bee in my bonnet was too much for me to handle, every single thing my friend said or did grated on my nerves, and I knew that if I went through with the plan, I would be miserable and make him miserable. So I jumped ship! I escaped to

Zurich two days after the wedding and hung out with Spaniard (Heads out of the gutter, folks…We’re just good friends!) for a few days, and then I went to Budapest, Hungary for a few days.  I ended the trip with a week in Virginia with my sister and her family.

Other than the little travel companion hiccup in Cannes, it was a great trip, and I’m very happy with the way things worked out.  I got to catch up with some of my favorite people in the world, and with my visit to Hungary, I’m now a member of the “Fifty Countries!” Club.

Okay, from this point forward, Random Thoughts will now be dedicated to Random Thoughts.  Like, for example, pondering why I am such a mega-bitch and bail on plans with people without any remorse or guilt whatsoever!  Until next time…
